Colourful houses stacked in a silver-mining valley
Guanajuato grew rich on silver, and its wealth built baroque churches and a grand opera house, the Teatro Juárez. Houses painted in every colour climb the steep sides of a narrow valley, and traffic runs through old tunnels beneath the town. Wander the tiny alleys, including the Callejón del Beso, follow the evening callejoneadas with costumed musicians, and take the funicular up to the Pípila monument for the view. Diego Rivera was born here, and the October Festival Cervantino fills the town with theatre and music.
