A highland colonial town in Chiapas
San Cristóbal sits in a high valley in Chiapas, with cool nights and a relaxed pace. Its low, colourful colonial houses line pedestrian streets full of cafés, and the baroque Santo Domingo church is surrounded by a market selling textiles woven by Tzotzil and Tzeltal Maya women. Nearby villages keep their own traditions: San Juan Chamula's church, with pine needles on the floor and candles everywhere, is extraordinary, though photography inside is forbidden. Boats cruise through the towering Sumidero Canyon a short drive away.
