Blue Mountains

Eucalyptus haze above sandstone cliffs

The Blue Mountains rise just west of Sydney, a dissected sandstone plateau of sheer cliffs and deep valleys covered in eucalyptus forest, whose oil gives the air its blue haze. Katoomba is the main town, and from Echo Point you look straight at the Three Sisters rock formation. Scenic World runs the steepest passenger railway in the world down into the Jamison Valley. Walking tracks lead to waterfalls such as Wentworth Falls, and the Jenolan Caves lie to the southwest.
