Wild mountains and a gourmet island
Tasmania, Australia's island state, is a place of wilderness and good eating. Nearly half of it is protected, from the rugged peaks of Cradle Mountain and the Overland Track to the pink granite and white sand of Wineglass Bay on the Freycinet Peninsula. Port Arthur is the country's most famous convict site. Hobart, the capital, sits beneath kunanyi/Mount Wellington, with a waterfront Saturday market at Salamanca Place and the underground galleries of MONA just upriver. Local oysters, whisky and cool-climate wine are excellent.
