Laneways, coffee and a love of sport
Melbourne takes its culture seriously. The city centre is threaded with laneways such as Degraves Street and Hosier Lane, full of cafés and street art, and the coffee is famously good. Federation Square faces Flinders Street Station, and the National Gallery of Victoria holds a major art collection. Queen Victoria Market has been trading since the 1870s. Sport is close to a religion, from Australian rules football at the MCG to the Australian Open, and trams run to seaside St Kilda.
