The great red rock of the Red Centre
Uluru rises about 350 metres above the desert plains of the Northern Territory, a great sandstone monolith that changes colour through the day and glows deep red at sunset. It is sacred to the Anangu, its traditional owners, who jointly manage Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park; climbing has been banned since 2019. Instead, walk the base, where waterholes and rock art line the path, and join a ranger or Anangu-led tour. Nearby, the domes of Kata Tjuta hide the Valley of the Winds.
