The world's largest sand island
K'gari, formerly known as Fraser Island, off the Queensland coast, is the largest sand island in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Despite being made of sand, it supports tall rainforest and more than a hundred freshwater lakes, including the crystal-clear Lake McKenzie. The eastern shore, Seventy-Five Mile Beach, is an official road for four-wheel drives, passing the rusting Maheno shipwreck and the rock pools of Champagne Pools. Dingoes live across the island, and humpback whales pass offshore in season.
