Bath

Roman baths and golden Georgian crescents

Bath owes its existence to hot springs, which the Romans turned into a bathing complex that still survives beneath the city. In the 18th century it became England's most fashionable spa, and its Georgian architecture, including the Royal Crescent and the Circus, makes the whole city a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Jane Austen lived here and set two novels in its assembly rooms. Visit the Roman Baths and Bath Abbey, then bathe in the rooftop pool at the modern Thermae Bath Spa.
