Glens, lochs and long empty roads
The Scottish Highlands are among the last great wild landscapes of Europe: heather-covered mountains, deep lochs and glens with more sheep than people. Glen Coe is the most dramatic valley, Loch Ness the most famous, and Ben Nevis, near Fort William, the highest mountain in Britain. Castles such as Eilean Donan and Urquhart add romance, and whisky distilleries dot the glens. The North Coast 500 driving route loops around the far north, and the Jacobite steam train crosses the Glenfinnan Viaduct in summer.
