Jagged ridges and fairy pools in the Hebrides
Skye is the Highlands at their most theatrical. The jagged Cuillin ridge dominates the south, while the Trotternish peninsula in the north holds the Old Man of Storr, a rock pinnacle, and the Quiraing's landslipped cliffs. The Fairy Pools, a chain of clear blue pools at the foot of the Cuillin, are a popular walk. Portree is the main town, with colourful harbour houses, and Dunvegan Castle has been the seat of the MacLeods for centuries. The weather changes fast; bring waterproofs and book accommodation early.
