A castle on a volcano and a city of closes
Edinburgh is one of Europe's most dramatic cities, built over extinct volcanoes with the castle perched on its rock above everything. The Royal Mile runs down from the castle through the Old Town's narrow closes and wynds to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, while the elegant Georgian New Town lies across Princes Street Gardens. Climb Arthur's Seat for the view, and try whisky in a traditional pub. Every August the Edinburgh Festival Fringe turns the whole city into a stage.
