Giant's Causeway

Forty thousand basalt columns meet the sea

The Giant's Causeway is made of around 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, most of them hexagonal, formed by ancient volcanic activity. Legend credits it to the giant Finn McCool, who built a path across the sea to Scotland. You can walk out over the stepping stones and follow the clifftop trail above. The Causeway Coastal Route continues to the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge, the clifftop ruins of Dunluce Castle, the Old Bushmills Distillery and the beech-lined Dark Hedges road.
