Mackintosh, music and Victorian grandeur
Glasgow grew rich as a shipbuilding and trading city, and its Victorian merchant buildings are some of the finest in Britain. It is the city of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, whose Art Nouveau designs appear in buildings such as the Willow Tea Rooms. The Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum and the Burrell Collection are free and excellent, and the Necropolis gives a sweeping view over the cathedral. Glasgow has a reputation for friendliness and one of the UK's best music scenes, and Loch Lomond is an easy trip.
