Medieval walls and a Gothic minster
York's history runs deep: founded by the Romans as Eboracum, captured by the Vikings as Jorvik, and prosperous through the Middle Ages. York Minster, one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in northern Europe, holds medieval stained glass on a vast scale. You can walk most of the city walls, and the Shambles is a narrow lane of overhanging timbered buildings. The Jorvik Viking Centre and the National Railway Museum are highlights, and afternoon tea at Bettys is a local institution.
