Wales's mountain heartland, known locally as Eryri
Snowdonia, known in Welsh as Eryri, is the oldest and largest national park in Wales. Its centrepiece is Yr Wyddfa, or Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales, which can be climbed on several paths or reached by a rack railway from Llanberis. Around it are glacial lakes, waterfalls near Betws-y-Coed, and a landscape of slate quarries recognised by UNESCO. Harlech and Caernarfon castles stand on its fringes, and Portmeirion, the Italianate fantasy village, is nearby. Outdoor activities range from zip lines to lake paddling.
