Maui

Volcano sunrises and the Road to Hana

Maui packs remarkable variety into one island. Watch sunrise from the summit of Haleakalā, a dormant volcano over 3,000 metres high, where the crater looks almost lunar. The Road to Hana twists along the northeast coast past waterfalls, rainforest and black-sand beaches, and the south and west coasts have calm bays for swimming and snorkelling. From roughly December to April, humpback whales gather in the channels off the island to breed. Snorkel trips run out to Molokini, a half-sunken crater with clear water.
